Trump and Musk's Monopoly Board

Trump and Musk’s monopoly board

Christopher Pyne, one-time Australian minister of the crown, gratuitously recommends Greenlanders embrace Trump’s desired purchase of Greenland on the basis they would be financially far better off.  Hello, is everything to be valued exclusively in financial terms?  Is this what human beings are all about?

But why purchase when you can just take. Trump’s suggestion that Gaza be owned by America, perhaps by himself, all structures raised to the ground and the people forcibly removed anywhere other than the US, to be replaced by the world’s newest and best real estate development, is another level of human hubris.  How good would a Trump tower be here on the edge of the mediterranean, guests could use the newly minted Trump currency. Trump’s bumbling thought bubble, straight from his heartfelt vault of wealth and possession, has nothing to do with Israel or a future for Palestinians, it is all about real estate.

Having just closed USAID, the body that would presumably respond to Palestinian humanitarian need, it is clear these needs are to be met by anyone other than the US pocket.

The proposal puts a scythe through 75 years of agreed international policy that assumes a Palestinian State exists alongside the State of Israel.

As a Palestinian spokesperson said in response; “If Trump wants Palestinians to live in their ‘happy place’ he should ensure their safe return to homes in the State of Israel from which they were removed following partition in 1948.

It is very hard to find words to express the horror and disgust I feel.   It is gut wrenching.
How Americans voted for such a contemptable leader, (or more likely allowed him to be appointed by refusing to vote) is beyond understanding.

I am trying to comprehend the thought processes that lie behind his pronouncements.  Perhaps a futile exercise, the words tumble out of a brain dominated by real estate signs.

It seems two thoughts lurk in the recess of both Trump and Musk’s minds.  The first is that winners have the right if not the responsibility to take all. In this line of thinking Palestinians (not just Hamas) are losers and therefore have no rights. Both men consider themselves ultimate winners and therefore have the obligation to prosecute anything that serves their best interest and punish those whom they perceive to be spoilers of their ambition. In US politics they clearly perceive themselves as winners, even to the extent of considering the congress and senate largely irrelevant.

In bizarre fashion, this is not even about Israel and its promotion. It is about the US and Trump’s personal aggrandisement.  Trump’s nominee as US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, still awaits confirmation.    He is a messianic, Zionist Christian who promulgates an ‘end times’ hypothesis that Jesus will return when Israel controls all the land from the river to the sea. This, he believes, will promote a thousand-year period when all who believe as he does will prosper, and all who do not will perish.  He supports the forced removal of all Palestinians. But, like Trump, he is not really concerned about Israel, Israel is no more than a pawn in the grander purposes of God as understood by Huckabee.  Huckabee could be likened to a Christian version of an ISIS leader. Because he believes Palestinians do not exist, their disappearance, even violent fate does not matter in the greater scheme of things.

When you believe the winner has the right to take all, then principle, morality or consequence do not matter.

The second thought that appears to be in the minds of these two narcissistic men is that if you are not a winner, if you cannot stand on your own feet, you do not deserve any help.  What is being cut from the US budget both in the US and overseas is expenditure for those without a foothold on the necessities of life.  Musk uses words that imply it is not just a waste, but almost a criminal offence to render assistance that does not result in economic return. Apparently, US public servants who have devoted their lives in the service of others are now deemed to be enemies of the state.

I am somewhat surprised that Trump has so far not declared the Great South Land of the Holy Spirit to be US property. Given our acquiescence on so many matters regardless of whether Labour or the Coalition are in power, maybe he mistakenly thinks we are already part of the Stars and Stripes.  In the last week or two I have found myself cheering for China in any tussle between the two ‘great powers’.

In these dreadful days it is vitally important that principle is clear, that political expediency or economic supremacy are not policy drivers.

  • No person has the right to take that which belongs to another.  No nation, or people, have the right to railroad another nation or people.
  • No one has the right to decide the future of another. Freedom is not the absence of conflict; it is the capacity to decide for oneself. No one is free unless all are free.
  • Every human being is neighbour. A civilised nation is not marked by its wealth or power but by its compassion for the powerless and needy.
Every passing day of the Trump presidency, the US feels less civilised. Through its power and influence, it is attempting to take much of the rest of the world down the same path.

I don’t think it’s worth putting much effort into understanding his thought processes. He is driven by narcissism and psychopathy. And he is not, despite his self assessment, very intelligent. He doesn’t ‘think’ in the way that we expect most people to think. Attempting to understand his mind would be rather like jumping into a pool of sewage.

Thanks Gillian,

Trump may be President but I doubt he is in control. He is the enthusiastic puppet of a group of greedy, evil and/or delusional people all out for their own aggrandisement. Musk for one, under the invisibility cloak of Trump’s ascendance, is effectively implementing a white collar coup. I hope the people who aren’t under the Trump spell have the wherewithal to unite and voice their opposition and alternatives to the direction this new administration has taken. Subservience and silence has not served them well.

Like you George, I cannot fathom how a nation's leader that purports to be the worlds best big brother, is lead by an absolutely self centered individual.
How Mr. Trump's followers believe he is the best there is, defies comprehension.

What a horror! A mega rich, evil genius manipulating a narcissistic megalomaniac leader of the most powerful nation in the world. And one fears the inevitable progress (descent) of absolute power to absolute corruption has only begun. The gullibility of the voting (and irresponsible non-voting) American public, cleverly manipulated by the politics of grievance, is one tragedy. What turns the guts even further is the evidence of politicians in this nation willing to prostitute themselves to the same inhuman values.

Myself, like the rest of you can barely comprehend how Trump has been elected in a democratic nation. Yet we must not forget what happened in Nazi Germany where the public were deceived/ enticed, and the horrors of what followed are still incomprehensible to me.
However, given the philosophical basis of the American forefathers of libertarianism, which raises the rights of the individual above any notion of community or self sacrifice, it is hardly surprising that this is where we end up. America first.! Me first! My rights, free speech, right to own a gun to protect myself (from what?), trump (Pardon the pun), any sense of what is best for all.
Wealth is the measure of intelligence and success, no matter how it is gained. Character and integrity or humility are all signs of weakness.

I am praying that Australia does not continue down this path and that we do not find Dutton at the helm. There are too many similarities for me.

Well George, it seems as though we’re in for four years of ever increasing, superlative-bending, mind-numbing, incomprehensible lunacy from this president and his cohort. Hope you can stay the distance.

But trying to understand him…a number of commentators keep on telling us he is purely transactional (as you alluded to with respect to ‘real estate signs’). Unfortunately, I think that it is all there is to his thought processes and there is not any other reasoning needed for him.

This makes his (and cohort’s) approach a complete anathema to what Jesus taught: first commandment to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul; the second is like it, love your neighbour as yourself (i.e. not trying to rip them off).

Many thanks for your comments.

Its ALL bizarre.

Donald's really behaving like a king, the very thing the US was founded against.

I think its important to note that Mike Huckabee, and his Christian Zionists friends are the ultimate in antisemites, since they cant wait for everything to be destroyed.

The double standards, lack of logic, and absence of empathy and compassion make me sick. I did find the lates post in The Shovel ( www.theshovel.com.au ) to be very poignant . ... "Palestinian Man Generously Offers To Take Over and Redevelop Fire-Ravaged, Hellscape of LA’s Malibu District".

This winner takes all attitude makes me give thanks for the minor parties here in Australia. I do not want either major party to have complete control and for hubris to take over. Its important to have in the system a need to develop empathy and understanding.

Although I disagree with everything Project 2025 stands for, although I disagree with Elon, donald and his billionaire mates, I hope they do them. I have such faith in humanity that I believe that their policies will produce a huge backlash. For example, once upon a time, here in Qld, Campbell Newman and his team were elected who stood for similar ideas as the republicans. Their policies were hugely hated and the response of the people a few years later was to elect more sensible people, who stayed in power for 10 + years. Whew! Its just a pity that the current mob will produce so much suffering and unnecessary death. The pyric good news is that out of suffering and exile comes creativity AND goodness... I hope (theologically speaking)

George ... keep up the good work

Thank you so much for this beautifully written article. Everything you said is perfect. Today here in the US was president's day. There were protests in every state against Trump and Musk. It was the Not My President's Day protest. People came out in droves in many states where it was freezing temperatures. People from all backgrounds and ages. I believe more than half of Americans are totally against Trump and disgusted by his actions. But it was a terrible terrible mistake for not everyone to vote. I believe the outcome would have been different. I grew up in Brooklyn in an apartment building owned by Trump's father Fred Trump. We used to see Donald the dictator at the pool during the summer. His father spoiled him terribly. In '68 he was eligible for the Vietnam draft. His father got a phony letter from a podiatrist saying that he had bone spurs in his feet to get out of the draft. And told him to have as many mistresses as he wanted, just don't get caught. Disgusting. He was raised to have no morals or character or decency. Then he said at one of those stupid rallies that he "loves Chistians". What a crock!!! And those people bought it. I'm from New York and most New Yorkers can't be fooled so easily. The people that were fooled were mostly poorly educated and easily impressed and ignorant biased racist people. He also likes Hitler! He used to read his speeches and also Mein Kampf I believe. He used the same technique as Hitler did to brain wash his followers. It's sickening. Frightening. I'm sick over the fact that my hard working grandmother paid his father rent for 35 years. And it became part of his money. Not all Americans want him. No way! Look for info on the protests. They're going to continue. My heart is broken. And how dare he claim to be pro life and then allow Musk to destroy USAID! Because he said that they're "radical lunatics!" Really?, Doctors and nurses who make little money because saving lives is more important to them than money. He can't comprehend this because his whole life has revolved around money! He's disgusting. Pope Francis said that he is a disgrace and ruthless. I'm going to agree with the Pope. Thank you
PS they should spray the oval office with Lysol everytime he leaves it. He stinks to high heaven!

Your post raises important questions about the dangers of unchecked power and the erosion of ethical considerations in politics, George. The historical parallels you draw, particularly to the rise of authoritarianism, are deeply concerning. It's a crucial reminder that we must be vigilant in defending democratic values and holding our leaders accountable for their actions.
